Greenhouse monitoring and control helping UK flower nurseries bloom

Greenhouse control system experts, Tomtech, are highlighting the significant impact UK flower production is receiving from better monitoring and control.

According to figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), UK flower production is experiencing a revival, reaching a value of £179 million in 2023, up from £126 million in 2019.

With a growing opportunity for flower cultivation in the UK, horticultural technology companies, such as Tomtech, are supporting the industry with the tools needed to create, monitor, and maintain the perfect environment within their flower nursery.

"At Tomtech, we love flowers—and flowers bloom best when given the right conditions! By harnessing intelligent environmental control systems in your greenhouse to ensure optimal conditions, UK nurseries can consistently produce bigger and better yields that keep florists and flower markets fully stocked with bold, beautiful British flowers," says Krzysztof Hernik, Managing Director at Tomtech.

With the varying conditions that each species of flower needs to grow, many nurseries often face challenges when attempting to reach optimal conditions for their flowers.

Tomtech's greenhouse control and monitoring systems provide data-driven insights to fine-tune environmental and climate conditions within greenhouse structures.

By eliminating guesswork when establishing a greenhouse's environment, commercial growers have been able to navigate seasonal variances, accurately determining how much supplementary light, heat, and water is needed during winter and summer months.

"Our technology helps commercial growers replicate the best possible conditions for various crops, including flowers and other ornamental plants. With the ability to monitor key metrics such as temperature, humidity, light, carbon dioxide, pH levels, and nutrient concentration, growers can ensure their plants receive exactly what they need to thrive," adds Krzysztof.

For almost 40 years, Tomtech has been a provider of commercial greenhouse monitoring and control systems.

Products by Tomtech are widely used to optimize growing conditions for crops grown within greenhouses across the UK, Europe, and further afield.

"As a UK-based company, we want to support our nation's growers and flower nurseries with better insights and control. Through our collaboration with the floral industry, we can maintain a steady supply of high-quality blooms year-round—from classic British favorites to exotic tropical varieties!" concludes Krzysztof.
