The Baden-Baden Rose Novelty Competition is a highlight of the year for many rose growers and rose lovers.
Guests and growers from all over the world meet in the test garden, which offers a magnificent view of the Black Forest. This year, around 140 new rose varieties from over 30 breeders from all over the world were up for selection. More than 70 experts, including from the USA, Canada, India and China, were invited to evaluate and award the roses. The competition took place for the 73rd time.
The roses were judged by a permanent jury and a panel of experts for 2 or 3 years, depending on the type of growth. On the day of the competition, an international jury is formed from the participants. The results of all the judging panels give the overall score and determine the ranking of the rose varieties.
On this competition day, the roses presented themselves under optimal weather conditions and in perfect condition and there was a broad field of varieties that had a very good chance of winning the Golden Rose.
For this breeding, a Persian wild rose "Rose persica" from Iran was crossed with a garden rose.
